June - Fishing Derby
  • Coordinator: Scott M.
  • Logistics (2006)
    • Saturday, June 10th, 7:00 AM (Awards at 10:00 AM)
    • Busch Wildlife Lake # 1 (Kids Catch & Release)
  • Preparation Required
    • Reserve the lake: Call the main number for Busch Wildlife and tell them you want to reserve an Educational Lake for a Cub Scout Pack.
    • The lakes are 1,2 or 15.
      • Lake 15 is bigger and has a bathroom, so that is the one we try to get but the other two will work just fine if that is all you can get.
    • Busch will send you the paper work.
    • There is one form that needs to be filled in and returned ASAP to hold the reservation.
    • There is a second form to be turned in after the Fishing Derby is over.
    • Try to reserve the first or second Saturday in June from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
    • Information Packets:
      • When making the reservation, ask if you can come pick up some informational packets for the boys.
      • They contain pictures of the fish so you can identify them as you catch them.
      • They also have tape measures to measure the fish.
    • Other Prep:
      • Purchase the prizes ahead of time (budget is $50).
      • The prizes should be fish-themed so we usually get a fishing pole or two, a tackle box or two, a small soft-sided cooler and then several small plastic containers for fishing lures and such (maybe fill the containers with candy, too).
      • Come up with approximately 13 - 15 prizes. That is usually how many boys we have and you will probably have enough for each boy to earn a prize.
    • Update the “pack_calendar.htm” page on the Pack 30 Website.
  • Support Materials
    • Awards:
      • Awards are for the scouts only (siblings may fish, but are not eligible for awards).
      • It helps to outline your awards on a piece of paper ahead of time.
      • You'll need a category for Biggest Fish and Most Fish Caught.
      • And some subcategories by age. So you would have Bears - Biggest Fish, Most Fish, Wolfs - Biggest Fish, Most Fish etc. and then some creative categories - Strangest catch (usually a turtle), Wettest Scout (if anyone falls in).
      • This year we had lots of Webelos so we gave prizes for Webelos Biggest fish - 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
    • “Record of Catches” forms on cardboard backing (these were made in previous years.
      • You will need about 20 and will need to make more as needed).
    • Information Packets (there are some left from this year; will need to have about 20 on-hand for the Derby, the left-overs are in a box in the Scout Shed).
  • Costs
    • Budget = $50
  • Notes
    • Review the requirements for the Fishing Belt Loop ahead of time. It only has 3 requirements.
      • Make a list of the fishing rules and hand out to each scout at the Derby.
      • Ask the parents to review with the Scout.
      • Also, tell the parents to have the scout bait at least one hook.
      • This is all it takes to earn the Fishing Belt Loop.
    • In years past, they have organized games for the Scouts to play.
      • One was to see who could cast a fishing line the farthest.
      • They did this on dry ground so they could measure it.
      • Also, in years past, someone has made neckerchief slides for the Fishing Derby.
      • Games and neckerchief slides are optional, so it's up to the coordinator (examples from previous years are in the box in the Scout Shed).
