Cub Scout training is open to all registered leaders.
There are a few different sessions that you must attend as a new Cub Scout
Leader.
Fast Start Training
Fast Start Training is a short self-taken training course,
available in VHS Video Tape or Computer CD format (it is also available on-line
from the BSA
Online Learning Center). It is
intended to give you a quick overview of the Scouting Program and the position
you are entering.
New Leader Essentials
This session is an introductory session that highlights
the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting. It addresses how
these aims and methods are reached using an age appropriate style within Cub
Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. Videos, discussions and hands-on
reinforcement are presented during the 90-min training session. All unit-based
volunteers—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders—take this session at
the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same
results with the youth they
serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.
Cub Scout Leader
Specific Training
This session gets you up to speed in your new Cub Scout
position. This training is focused on teaching the new leader, or leader in a
new position, just how easy and fun Cub Scouting can
be! This training is offered in five different formats, each lasting less than 3
hours. The formats are: Tiger Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den
Leaders, Cubmasters, and
Pack Committee Members. Assistant leaders should take the training for the
leader position they are assisting.
Youth Protection
Training
This is offered at Roundtable every other month. It
is required for all Unit Leaders regardless of position and must be taken every
two years.
Youth Protection Training is also available on-line
through the St. Louis Area Council website at:
Leader Outdoor
Experience (LOE)
Leader Outdoor Experience (LOE) is a supplemental training course for all leaders involved in the Cub Scout program. LOE is held four times yearly (two courses are held in the spring and two in the fall). Each spring and fall a course is held at Beaumont Scout Reservation and the second spring course is held at Pine Ridge Scout Camp and the second fall course is held at Camp Lewallen. LOE begins on Saturday morning at 8:00 am and ends on Sunday afternoon around 1:30 pm. Leaders will be provided with 3 meals and a snack (a special "Cracker Barrel" will be held on Saturday evening). Upon completion of the course leaders will receive a patch and participation card and a lot of take home projects.
Webelos leaders are required to have this course in order to receive their Webelos leader recognition knot.
This weekend of training will be very informative and everyone will leave with information to pass along to others and provide you with ideas to build a strong quality program for all ages of Cub Scouts.
